Monkey Okay

Mausoleum

Mausoleum is part II of the band's trilogy. Part I, The Long Haul..., revolved around themes of birth and creation, specifically the band's movement into a new genre and musical direction and the idea of creating this trilogy. Part II instead focusses on death and mortality. The songs all look at death from different perspectives and how death comes in many forms and in many parts of life. Musically, the album picks up where the previous left off, and sonically expands in every form.

Bio

Monkey is an experimental and atmospheric rock band from Aalborg - formed in 2015 and with two albums in their catalogue, the band has continuously attempted to expand the boundaries of their own musical expression and want to exist adjacent to, or in between, different genres. The band writes songs that are challenging and which give them room to move where they want musically. The band's second album, The Long Haul of Cercopithecoidea, was released in December 2020 og marked a significant change of style for the band, that saw them move in a much more progressive and complex direction. The release of said album also let the album begin their working relationship with the artist Peter Max-Jakobsen, who created the artwork for the record - and in the wake of this collaboration they have continued to work together, creating live shows where Peter Max-Jakobsen creates painting simultaneously with the band's performance and then these works are projected on to the stage.

The result of this work can be seen below:

Live Session

This collaborative performance is something the band is looking at taking on the road and doing a string of shows with - both in Denmark and Europe. During 2022 and 2023 the band wrote and recorded the second part of the planned trilogy of albums, and the follow-up to The Long Haul of Cercopithecoidea. This comping album bears the title Mausoleum and will continue the band's musical evolution i new and even more experimental ways. The record is set to be released in spring 2025 and once again Peter Max-Jakobsen will create an original artwork for the cover. Live the band is an engulfing experience, where the audience is invited into a room filled with riveting rock music, musical fragility, experimental digressions, and will power to push the songs in new and exciting directions.
